The Importance of Going to the Dentist
By Brenda Williams
Going to the dentist is one of those things that we hate to do
but which we know that we need to. For those of us who have
perfect teeth, going to the dentist isn't such a huge deal
because all that it typically means is that we need a cleaning
and the occasional X-Rays. However, for those of us who put off
going to the dentist, and who don't take care of our teeth the
way that we should, we are more than likely setting ourselves up
for disaster.
Did you know that what you eat affects the health of your
teeth? Recently, I watched a documentary on a number of people
whose diets consisted heavily of drinking a certain brand of
soda. The result? More than half of their teeth were rotting or
had rotted out of their heads! When are teeth aren't healthy, it
can lead to all sorts of other major health problems! For
example, if you have a tooth that is bothering you, and you fail
to have it checked by a dentist, the tooth may be infected,
which may lead to a bacterial infection in your mouth. Because
your gums are invariably made up of tissue that has all sorts of
blood vessels, it can be extremely easy for an infection that
started in your tooth to then spread into your blood stream,
making your entire body sick. It's not only a serious issue;
it's dangerous.
As responsible adults, we need to make sure that we are eating
healthy each and every day. This isn't to say that you can't
occasionally have a hamburger, hot dog, ice cream or even French
fries; but everything should be done with moderation. Your diet
should consists of heart healthy foods such as raw vegetables
and fresh fruit. Fish is also good for you. You should limit the
amount of coffee and soda that you drink and try to up the
amount of protein in your diet from foods such as milk, yogurt
and egg whites. Food items that are high in vitamin D will help
keep your teeth and bones strong.
For the vast majority of Americans, going to the dentist is a
very real fear for them. In some extreme cases, people actually
have to take a Valium or some sort of sedative prior to even
stepping foot in the office! For this reason, sedation dentistry
has gained quite a bit of popularity in recent years. In other
cases, preexisting medical issues force others to have very real
concerns when going to the dentist. For example, if you or
someone you know is diabetic, it is known that you have to be
extra careful when it comes to bleeding, etc. If you are scared
or have some sort of fear when going to the dentist, make sure
that you discuss these fears with your dentist so that they can
assess how best to help you. Going to the dentist should be a
fulfilling experience, not something which causes you pain or
anxiety.
