Keeping your child's teeth healthy

Keeping your child's teeth healthy

Below is some useful information and facts which will help to keep your child's smile shining.

Remember that dental care begins before your Childs teeth can be seen. Teeth start to develop during pregnancy and many children can have up to 20 teeth fully developed in the jaw at birth.
Once your child has teeth showing you can begin to brush them with a soft children's toothbrush, however running a damp cloth over your babies gums before the teeth break through can help prevent the build up of bacteria, which could lead to damage.
Children can have problems with tooth decay if good feeding habits are not practised at home. For example, if milk remains on the teeth for a prolonged period of time, the sugar from the milk can start to eat away at the enamel – this condition is also known as ‘baby bottle tooth decay'
It is important that your child is seen by a dentist regularly so that early signs of tooth decay can be caught as well as many other problems that can be easily prevented with early detection.
Encourage your child to eat low sugar snacks – fruit and vegetables are not only great for your oral health, but they also make up part of a healthy balanced diet too!
By their teenage years your child should be brushing their teeth twice daily (once in the morning and last thing at night) with fluoride toothpaste. Flossing at this time will also help oral hygiene and prevent the build up of bacteria.
